I am a Libran born in the eighties to both parents who were teachers and living in a single bedroom apartment in the Western Area(Freetown, Cox street, Cassell Farm) of Sierra Leone. During those times and for a large part of my life, my parents were struggling, as in those days and even now teaching is considered one of the lowest paid jobs in Sierra Leone. There was a saying that people would compare poverty to being a teacher, “Po Po Teacher”.(In my local dialect-Krio).They did every thing in their power to make a happy life for us and for their capability I would say it was better than most, considering Sierra Leone is considered one of the poorest countries in the world.
At an early age, my parent instilled in us about the importance of going to school and getting an education. With that in mind I did my best to be better in school. I spent two years in what is considered Pre-K (UMC Urban center) and then proceeded to a school called St Theresa for the first two years of my life. I can say for sure that during those years I cannot really remember much about my life or my experiences but I was told that we had a happy life, considering our status. My parents were awesome, they made it work.
My brother was born two years after me and my sister another two and a half years after my brother. Before going onto class three(3) or grade 3 there was a big change in our family and that changed the whole course of my being which helped shape my life today. Our lives did change greatly and as kids we never knew the extent its impact would have in our lives.
I will stop here for now but in my next blog you would find out about this change and its effect on my family.
This just sums it up for me ” Sometimes our lives have to be completely shaken up, changed, and rearranged to relocate us to the place we re meant to be” Anonymous, from my sister’s WhatsApp wall.
I should be around two to three years in this picture. Can’t say for sure 🙂
